Schoellhorn-Albrecht Winches for Bayou Pointe Aux Chenes Flood Control Structure
Schoellhorn-Albrecht recently completed the design and manufacture of the Operating Machinery & Equipment used on the Bayou Pointe Aux Chenes Flood Control Structure. The equipment was delivered to Bollinger Shipyard in Morgan City, LA and installed on the swing gate portion of the flood wall in May of 2017.
The Operating Machinery & Equipment consisted of the following:
Opening Winch
10 HP Hydraulic Winch capable of 23,500lb continuous Line Pull at 10 FPM Line Speed. The winch was fabricated with an 18” drum and sized for 165 feet of Ø3/4” Wire Rope. A running line tensiometer was used to provide feedback to the control console on the current line speed and tension. A Ø42” brake disc, along with a hydraulic caliper brake, are used as a drag braking system to provide back tension on the wire rope.
Closing Winch
20 HP Hydraulic Winch capable of 68,500lb continuous Line Pull at 10 FPM Line Speed. The winch was fabricated with a 26” drum and sized for 240 feet of Ø1-3/8” Wire Rope. A running line tensiometer was used to provide feedback to the control console on the current line speed and tension. A Ø56” brake disc, along with [2] hydraulic caliper brakes, are used as a drag braking system to provide back tension on the wire rope.
Hydraulic Power Unit
[2] 75 HP (Redundant) Electric Motors were installed to power the opening and closing winch. The HPU was fitted with a 100 gallon stainless steel reservoir, heat exchanger, heater, & filters. All fittings, couplings, and valves were constructed of stainless steel, for use in a marine environment.
Control Console
A stainless steel control console was fabricated with a custom HMI for control of the winch system. Each winch was controlled by proportional joysticks which allow for the operator to adjust speed as necessary, while still maintaining full line pull. Each winch’s caliper brake is fully adjustable from 0-100% braking force, allowing for the operator to fine tune the necessary back tension on the wire rope. The HMI was programmed to provide the operator with all of the necessary feedback needed for safe flood gate operation. This includes, but is not limited to, line payout, line tension, % caliper brake force, motor selection, system operational state, oil temperature/level, disconnect status, fault warnings, etc.
Guide Sheave/Fairleads
A heavy duty Ø16” vertical guide sheave was fabricated for use with the opening winch Ø3/4” wire rope. Along with the guide sheave, a Ø16” double sheave fairlead and a Ø28” double sheave fairlead were fabricated for use with the Ø3/4” and Ø1-3/8” wire rope, respectively. The guide sheave and fairleads were all designed to withstand the breaking strength of the wire rope used.
